This week, we are learning all about the letter Pp. We are trying to remember to always start our letters from the top. Our pictures of things that start with the letter P are getiing quite detailed and many students are sounding out their own letter P words. Please take a few minutes to read your child's letter P booklets.
In addition,
we are collecting food for the Calgary Food Bank. Our grade 5/6 students are organizing this school wide innitiative. The class that brings in the most donations will receive the 'Supercan' award. Let's see if Kindergarten can support this very worthwhile cause!

Pumpkin Carving

Please remember to wear your costume for our Pumpkin party to school tomorrow. As we have lots of great food for our party, you do not need to send a snack to school.
Today, we sequenced the story Pumpkin Pumpkin by Jeanne Titherington. Everyone cut out six pictures, and glued them in sequence for how a pumpkin seed grows into a big pumpkin.

Pumpkin Party

On Thursday, October 29th the Kindergarten class will be having a Pumpkin Party. We have some exciting pumpkin activities planned for our special day. This year, our students will be decorating a cookie and enjoying some healthy, party food. Students are welcome to come in costume, but please keep it practical for the school environment. No weapons of any sort, please!

October 23

This week we carved a two pumpkins for our class Jack-o'-lanterns. As we worked we discussed shapes and the parts of a pumpkin. Today, we labeled the parts of a pumpkin and I am so impressed with everyone's growing innitial letter sounds! For snack we enjoyed some yummy pumkin seeds that Joanne our parent volunteer made for us. Our snack lead right into our story about seeds and our search for seeds outside. Everyone was able to find seeds, which we collected for further study in the classroom. We finished off our FAF with some time on the playground, which was a lot of fun!

October 16th

Fabulaous morning!
Great time at Big Centers!
We had a lesson at the amphlitheater in Whispering Woods about weeds. Tessa from the Calgary Zoo taught us how to identify weeds and how to dig them up and pull them out. Everyone did a great job of identifying weeds and digging them out. We put them in a composting bag.

Our First Fire Drill!

We had our first fire drill today! We did an excellent job of lining up quietly (despite the very loud alarm) and lining up to walk outside to our meeting place.
Computer class is going well where we are getting better at logging off and on our desktop computers. We have our assigned computers in the learning commons.  Star fall is a fun way to practice our literacy and numeracy skills. Our buddies from the portable and room four are very helpful in helping us to learn how to use a desk top computer.
Today we received our own mini backpacks and mugs for our FAF's! A big than you to our Dr. Coffin parent council for sponsoring this fantastic idea for our adventures outside!

FAF October 9th

We went outside on a scavenger hunt. We were looking for fall artifacts. We found prickly bushes and plants, crabapples, pinecones and colorful leaves. Some leaves were still green.
We ran outside on the field and then we had snack.
Finally we enjoyed exploring some new 'big centers' such as Home Living and trains.
Happy Thanksgiving!

October 2 Fresh Air Friday

Today, Kindergarten really enjoyed their time outside! We followed up our lesson from yesterday about the parts of a tree. We looked at the trees outside and identified their roots, trunk, branches, leaves/needles, bark and fruit (pine cones and crab apples). Next we sketched the Ornamental Crab Tree at the front of our school. Our students sketched excellent, detailed pictures of our tree!

Thursday, October 1, 2015

Our Terry Fox run was a great success! Kindergarten ran 190 laps which contributed to the Dr. Coffin's total laps.
1058!
To date we have raised $1500.00. We are getting close to our goal of 2015.00. Donations will be collected until Friday, October 2nd.

Thank you to all of our helpers!

Tomorrow is Fresh Air Friday or FAF so please dress for the weather. Kindergarten has just started our study of Trees. Let's see what we learn about our trees in our outdoor spaces. Please note that we are not venturing into Whispering Woods as we are trying to avoid the wasps in the area.

Everyone was very happy to play in our 'BIG' centers. We are getting better at choosing a center and making new friends.
