Zoo Field Trip - May 29

A big 'Thank-You!', goes out to our wonderful, zoo field trip volunteers. If you were unable to join us, there will be more field trips to chaperone in grade one.
Today, we sat in a circle, and shared two things that we learned at the zoo. Everyone was asked to speak in a full sentence, and use the word 'and' to link their two ideas. I was impressed with everyone's ideas that they shared about the life cycle of butterflies as well as what they observed about the Gorillas, Komodo Dragons, Pandas, and other animals. There was also a bit of a theme about animal poo, and what Gorillas do about runny noses.😂
Tomorrow, we are going outside for more partner work, to study insects, and to create a habitat for our Butterflies.

Tuesday, May 28 - Field Trip Tomorrow and Caterpillars

Today was Treat Day, if you forgot to send in some money, please send in 25 cents.
Thank-you for returning your field trip paperwork so promptly.
We're all set for tomorrow, and the weather forecast is a wonderful sunny day! Just in case, please send a light jacket with your child for our trip. Everyone will be riding a big, yellow bus to the zoo!
As we will not have time for snack before lunch, please ensure that your child has a good breakfast.
There is no need to send money for treats. As per tradition, we will be having an ice cream treat at the zoo!
Since this morning, our caterpillars are changing into the Chrysalis stage!

Thursday, May 23 - Bugs!

Our Insect presentation was so much fun! Our presenter Jana was a real expert, who introduced us to some amazing creatures. Jana asked our class if they would like to become scientists who study insects - an Entomologist? A student told her that they were already scientists, and other students agreed with him! And that's exactly what I was so proud to hear!
We were introduced to: Doodlebugs, Millipede, Butterflies and the egg stage, Praying Mantis, Tarantula, Beetles, and a vinegar spraying bug called a Thelyphonida.

Monday, May 13 - LGT Plant Care

The hardening off process for seedlings/plants
About two weeks before transplanting seedlings outdoors, begin the process called ‘hardening off’ or gradually getting them used to the outdoors. This minimizes transplanting shock and after all the time and care you’ve invested, it’s worth the effort.
Start by setting young plants outside in a shaded, protected area for a few hours a day during the afternoon. Bring them inside before the temps begin dropping in late afternoon; each day adding a bit more time outdoors. After a few days, let them sit in direct sunshine and gradually increase their time in the sun daily. After a couple of weeks the seedlings should be ready to stay outside until transplanted into the garden. Check the forecast for possible risk of frost.
This Wednesday, May 15 - Volunteer Tea - 2:00 to 3:30 PM
Friday, May 17 - no classes for students
Monday, May 20 - Holiday
Wednesday, May 22 - Live Insect Presentation - We could use 1 volunteer please
Save the Date Tuesday, June 25 - Last Day for Kindergarten - Please  join us from 9:45 AM to 11:20 AM for a class picnic and activities outside. All family members are welcome to attend, including younger siblings and grandparents. Please stand by for further information.

Thursday, May 9 - Surprise!

We are very busy creating a very special, surprise for Mother's Day.
Is your gift 3D?
Is it heavy or light?
Is it Living or Non Living?
Is it a craft?
Hmmmm Tomorrow, you may want to think about your transportation home from school.
We are looking forward to going outside tomorrow for FAF. Your child may need some sunscreen, hat and or sunglasses. Then again it may rain!

Monday, May 6 - Our Garden

Our L.G.T. garden is growing, and beginning to bloom with some flowers!
We have sketched our sprouts, plants and our planter of beans. Everyone is learning to check their plants for needs such as water, and light. Can you spot our beans, tomatoes, basil, cucumbers, nasturtiums, and parsley?
Today, we finished our science inquiry about Living and Non-living. We have spent quite a bit of our time outside, identifying and talking about our findings about the needs of plants, and animals.

Friday, May 3 - Signs of Spring

Yeah! During our F.A.F. excursions we are looking for signs of Spring. Today, on our walk we found some wild crocuses in Whispering Woods. Also, we spied the Tulips and Daffodils that are beginning to bloom at the front of the school. Sooo very exciting for all of us.
