We had a great Terry Fox Run! Wow, we have such excellent Kindergarten runners!
Thank you volunteers for assisting us with this great fund raiser.

Library books are due back to school either on Mondays or Tuesdays
This gives Mrs. Kidd time to check in our books for our Library exchange time on Wednesdays.

Terry Fox Run

Hello everyone,
I wanted to confirm a few things for our Terry Fox Run on Friday

10:30 – 10:45 -  Meet in the gym for a brief pep rally led by Grade 5/6 leaders.
10:45 – 11:10 - Kindergarten Students will run laps of the soccer field. The route will be marked by pylons and students will collect popsicle sticks to keep track of their laps.

A few points:
  • We will participate in the Terry Fox Run, rain or shine, so please make sure your students are prepared as the forecast does not look great that day. Remind them… Terry ran in the rain :-)
  • Please remind students to continue bringing in their donations until Monday.
  •  “I am Running For….” stickers and tattoos will be handed out tomorrow which students can wear the day of the run.
Thank you for your support!

Red is Best Project

  • This week we are reading Red is Best by Kathy Stinson. Next Thursday, October 6 each student will be making a favorite color collage. Please send in a baggie (labeled with your child’s name) with small items that can be glued onto paper. For example: ribbons, bows, fabric, stickers, balloons and yarn would be a good start. Your son/daughter has chosen the color  (sent home today with your child's color choice)________________.
  • I will have some additional items in the classroom for our students to use for their collage. The collage is slightly larger than a 8.5 x 11 piece of paper.

Monday, September 26

What a great morning of sharing, drawing and printing words for the letter 'S'!
Everyone did so well listening on the carpet and working in their printing duo tangs.
Our grade 5/6 friends came in to talk to us about raising 'Toonies' for our Terry Fox run.  We have a container in our classroom for our students to contribute change for the Cancer Fund. We talked very briefly about Terry Fox and his run for Cancer Awareness and Research. In Kindergarten, I do not go into too much detail about Terry Fox and his Cancer. Our students certainly remembered that stamina is important for our 'jogging' and 'focus' on our work.

Shapes and Drawing

Our drawing skills are really coming along! We can hardly wait until our interviews to show you our drawings!
Tomorrow, Kindergarten will be visiting the Learning Commons to look at the Scholastic Book Fair items. During Interviews, you are welcome to purchase some books and other items. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a book and fundraise for our library.

Wednesday, Sept. 13

We're off to a great start!
For our self portraits, Kindergarten is learning how to draw their faces and later how to use shapes to draw their bodies. Today, we introduced how to hold a paint brush and use puck paints. As this is a small group activity, some students will have their turn at painting on another day.

Terry Fox Run Friday, October 30
For the Terry Fox Run, we are practicing our running on the soccer field. Please ensure that your child wears outdoor shoes that are suitable for running. Dressing for the weather is also important!

Library Book Exchange - Wednesdays at 10 AM
Today, Kindergarten joined Mrs. Kidd our librarian in the Learning Commons for a story. It was nice and cozy in the library as everyone either had a pillow or a stuffy to hold.
On Thursday, Sept 22 and Friday, Sept. 23  Mrs. Kidd has organized a 'Scholastic Book Fair' for our students and families to buy books.
Next week for  our Library time, Kindergarten will have an opportunity to look at some books.
We will not be purchasing books at this time. You are more than welcome to shop for books during our conferences. Please watch for the 'Worth Mentioning' email from Mrs. Rennie for more details.

Friday, September 9

We have enjoyed a great first week of Kindergarten. To date, we have established our morning routine and how to work at our table groups. Today, was a very exciting introduction to our "Big Centers" (i.e.: Lego, ipad, drawing, home living, dollhouse, magnetic letters, play dough, cars and trucks). For Fresh Air Friday, we went outside to explore the sun circle and nature ground.

Thank you, for returning your paper work so promptly.

I am looking for a parent volunteer for our Scholastic Book Club. This involves preparing the flyers to be sent home, collecting the orders, online ordering and book distribution to our students.

For parent volunteering, our room parent and  I will be creating a google volunteer calendar. Once we go through our volunteer forms, we will determine our room parent and move forward from there.
While we wait for this process to be completed, please email me for a date that you would like to volunteer (if you already have your C.B.E. clearance).

Thank you!

September 7

We have enjoyed a wonderful start to our Kindergarten year of learning together!

For our Fresh Air Friday outings, your child needs to be dressed for the weather. We spend a portion of each Friday morning learning outside.

As Kermit the frog said,” It's not easy to be green!”

For snack, we encourage your child to bring a water bottle or juice and a peanut free snack that your child can eat and open independently in 10 to 15 minutes. I do have a small supply of juice boxes and peanut free granola bars for those days that your child’s snack is left at home. As an Earth School we are encouraging garbage free lunches, where everything must go home when finished. Packaged snacks are just fine for occasions when we will be outside and require a snack. This is a Green Team, DR. E.W. School  initiative.

Kindergarten Routines and Expectations

The kindergarten school hours are:
Morning 8:40 AM – 11:20 AM

Welcome to Kindergarten

As our learning begins as soon as the students enter our classroom, it is important to be punctual. We are excited to announce that our kindergarten students and their families will have the opportunity to use a “Kindergarten Only” door.  Our door is located on the west side of the school by the portable. This will keep our youngest learners safe and comfortable as they enter and exit the school. There is also a small area for parents to wait outside during inclement weather. Most importantly the students will be able to bring their families into the classroom more frequently. When your child is excited about a centre, an art project or their journal writing, you will be able to come and see it right away! We want all families to feel welcome to come in and see all the amazing things we are doing. We understand that the pick up/drop off in kindergarten is sometimes complicated, especially with younger siblings, however, we know you will appreciate our “safety first” motto!

If you child will not be attending school, please call the school to notify the office (403-777-6190).

Your child will need indoor shoes that they are able to put on and take off independently. (i.e.: Velcro or slip on shoes). Indoor shoes need to be appropriate for physical education and should have a good grip and support.

The children also need a backpack big enough to be able to carry their library books, snacks, important papers and artwork.

This is a Green Team initiative.

Preparing Your Child for Kindergarten

Taken from the book My Shining Star – by Rosemary Wells

1.             Respect – A child who is treated with respect at home will have self- respect. He will learn to cooperate and have empathy with others.
2.           Listening – Listen to your child’s stories, hopes, and worries. Hear her and respond. She will learn to listen to others.
3.           Patience – A child who sees you are not afraid of failure, who sees you finish what you begin, will try, try again until he succeeds.
4.           Trust – Keep your promises and your child will be trustworthy.
5.           Work – A child who shares in the daily work at home will learn to be responsible.
6.           Honesty – If a child is taught to respect the truth, if he sees justice used to solve problems at home, he will know right from wrong.
7.           Time – Children spell love T-I-M-E. If your child owns enough one-on-one time with you each day, she will have confidence because she knows she has value.
8.           Reading – Read to your child twenty minutes every day. She will love books. She will learn to concentrate. She will learn critical thinking and be set free to dream.
9.           Writing – Introduce your child to writing and drawing. Praise his efforts. He will be prepared for his schoolwork. He will do it with pleasure.
10.        Habits – Children need quiet time every day. They need a good night’s sleep and regular meals of wholesome foods. They need to be outdoors getting fresh air. Good habits make a child ready to learn.
Give me a child who is ready to learn . . .
I’ll give you a shining star in return!
